Apron History

Aprons have been used by cooks for hundreds of years. Cooking aprons were used by women and men for a many tasks long before they were seen on 1950s television. In the 1950s, women were portrayed as good mothers and homemakers and you hardly saw then without their kitchen aprons on.

There are Biblical references about aprons. Some researchers cite a passage in which Adam and Eve sewed together fig leaves to make aprons to use for cover. We usually think of kitchen aprons and cooking aprons, but aprons also have served as a cover-up for other tasks that are usually messy. Butchers, welders and bakers have always used full aprons to protect both their clothing and bodies from their messy work.

For centuries, homemakers have used aprons. Full and half aprons have been used to keep women's clothing clean. They have also used kitchen aprons to carry utensils, for gathering and carrying eggs and for transporting wood. Cooking aprons have been an effective tool for a long time.

It wasn't until the 1940s and 1950s that people started to see the stereotypes of the ""perfect mother"" who always wore a kitchen apron. Up until then, kitchen aprons were thought of as a functional piece of the wardrobe.

Today’s full and half aprons are more stylish. Aprons have made a fashionable comeback with the help of our stylish apron sets.

Grandma's Apron

The use of our Grandmother's aprons were to protect their dresses underneath, because they only had a few.  They also served at potholders for removing hot pans from the oven. It was easier to wash aprons than dresses and used less material.  
Aprons were wonderful for drying children's tears and used for cleaning out dirty ears. Aprons were used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs from the coop. When guests came, those aprons were the ideal hiding places for shy little ones. When the weather became cold, our grandmothers wrapped it around their arms to keep them warm.
Those old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow while bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were carried into the house in those aprons. From their gardens they carried all sorts of fruits and vegetables. After the corn was eaten it carried out the husks. In fall, those aprons were used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture those old aprons could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, our Grandmas walked out onto the porch, waved their aprons, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to eat.
